Abstract

The advantages of x-ray gating-pulse devices over frequency, amplitude, and start-stop meters have been demonstrated, but the gating-pulse method itself has been insufficiently studied. In this paper the authors provide the theory for this method with regard to estimating the parameters of a signal backscattered from an interface between two media and study the space-time distortion of the x-ray pulse as it traverses a given path between the emitter, the medium, the scattering surface, the medium again, and the detector, and the effect of various factors on the shape of the backscattered pulse.
