Abstract

A simple, rapid method for the quantitative estimation of secondary amines was developed based upon the reaction of this group of compounds with sodium nitroprusside and acetaldehyde. The conditions for optimal color production are described and the extent of interference by various primary and tertiary amines is evaluated. No appreciable interference from other compounds commonly found in biological tissues was found. This assay permits estimation of 0.05–0.80 μmoles of N-methylalanine. The possible application of this method to the measurement of proline and hydroxyproline is suggested.
