Abstract

Selection of route for laying cross country petroleum pipeline is governed by the factors like shortest distance between supply and demand points, constructability, minimum effect on environment, approachability etc. This paper establishes a decision support system (DSS) for pipeline route selection with the application of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multi-attribute decision making technique. AHP allows the consideration of all factors in interactive way with the intervention of decision-makers. The application of the model has been demonstrated through a case of pipeline route selection from Indian perspective. The cost- benefit comparison of shortest route (conventionally selected) and optimal route establishes the effectiveness of the model.
