Abstract

(Int J Obstet Anesth. 2022;51:103256) Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is increasingly problematic throughout the United States. To improve care and timely PPH treatment, an accurate estimation of blood loss during delivery is critical. Visual estimation was the standard for years, but quantitative blood loss (QBL) is a more accurate measurement. However, normal values of QBL have not yet been estimated for the United States. This study primarily aimed to establish a normal range and distribution for QBL after a vaginal delivery (VD). The authors also looked at how often PPH occurred and how much the gravimetric method involving the weighing of sponges and laparotomy (lap) sponges contributed to total QBL compared with the V-drape, which presents a volumetric measurement.
