Abstract

Intelligible speech following the partial or total loss of the tongue has historically been perceived as a divine miracle and has inspired theological debate (Twisleton, 1873). Today, although glossectomy speech is no longer seen as a heavenly wonder, the functional consequences of ablative tongue surgery are still a mystery.
