Abstract

This chapter constitutes an in-depth quantitative (linear regression) analysis of the results of a language attitudes questionnaire, distributed throughout Northern Catalonia in 2016. A series of conclusions are reached, allowing us unprecedented insight into the language attitudes situation in the region. Most importantly, the pervasive extent of monoglossic language ideologies in favour of French is revealed: not only is French (unsurprisingly) associated with status in the region, but it is also the prime vehicle for solidarity. Language loyalties are shown not to be oppositional (unlike in some other Catalan-speaking regions), with participants frequently according solidarity values to both French and Catalan simultaneously. Moreover, the questionnaire reveals a high level of community support for an increased presence of Catalan in the education system.
