Abstract

Recently, interest has been shown in the use of a purge and trap technique for the analysis of low molecular weight Environmental Protection Agency priority pollutants. A procedure for analysis of halogen and nonhalogen priority pollutants in a single analysis in the less than microgram per litre (part per billion) concentration range is described. This is achieved by use of either high-resolution glass or steel gas chromatography capillary columns. Percent recoveries for various compounds ranged from 51 to 100 percent. Percent standard deviations as well as lower limits of detection for each compound investigated are reported. Problems encountered in the coupling of a commercially available purging and trapping device to glass capillary columns are described and solutions presented.
