Abstract

This paper provides a quantitative analysis on the energy efficiencies of the battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system and the lithium-ion-battery-only system under the JC08 driving cycle. There are two control parameters selected in the analysis, the efficiency of the DC-DC converter and the internal resistance of the battery pack. The analysis shows that compared to the battery-only system the battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system is less sensitive to the internal resistance of the battery pack. Meanwhile, the energy loss of the DC-DC converter is a key factor to the overall efficiency of the battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system. With a high-efficiency DC-DC converter, the battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system can achieve a similar or higher efficiency than the battery-only system.
