Abstract

The effect of carbides on the relative intensity of sputtered ions in low alloy steels was investigated with the ion microprobe mass analyzer. The relative intensity varied with the formation of carbide in the matrix. The variation of the relative intensity imposed a severe limitation upon the analysis of alloy elements by means of the calibration curve procedure. A method to correct for the effect of carbide formation was proposed and applied successfully to the analysis of low alloy steels.
