Abstract
The McLeod phenotype is characterized by numerous acanthocytic red cells. Glaubensklee et al report a significant increase in numerical density and decrease in the volume of intramembrane particles (IMP) of McLeod red cells on unidirectionally shadowed replicas of freeze fractured membranes and suggest that the dissociation of band 3 glycoprotein in this membrane may underlie the abnormal shape. Rotary shadowing has several advantages over unidirectional shadowing rendering it more reliable for IMP counts. In this study we compare and quantitate the numerical densities of the IMP of red cells of normal donor and McLeod patient on rotary shadowed replicas.
