Abstract

Based on the energy balance principle for a serrated shear event, the configuration entropy change of a plastic flow within a shear band in metallic glasses is precisely quantified. With this method, we successfully investigated the evolution of entropy change with the plastic displacement/strain. It was found that the evolution of entropy changes for various metallic glasses follows a unified linear relation. The experimental result is consistent with the thermodynamic deduction from the free volume theory, corroborating the nature of shear-induced dilation for the plastic flow of metallic glasses.
