Abstract
The chemical constituents of callus and leaf tissues of Citrus jambhiri Lush were extracted in methanol, ethanol and chloroform and the extracts were estimated for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC and TFC).Evaluation of antioxidant and antibacterial potential of callus and leaf extracts revealed that methanol extracts exhibited higher DPPH radical scavenging activity (radical scavenging index 4.55 of leaf extract and 9.09 of standard BHA).Further, these extracts were most effective against pathogenic bacteria (with inhibition zone diameters 8.0 and 8.9 mm against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi, respectively). Leaf extracts were found to contain slightly higher amounts of TPC and TFC and hence, higher antioxidant and antibacterial activities as compared to callus extracts.
