Abstract
Immunoglobulin-secreting cells (Ig-SC) can be observed in animals that are not deliberately immunized. This phenomenon has been referred to as spontaneous “background” Ig production (1). The background Ig production is induced both by endogenous and exogenous antigenic stimuli(2,3,4). Exogenous stimuli mainly depend on antigens that cross the mucosae. Therefore, studying the development of the spontanous Ig-SC response at mucosal sites is an appropriate way to acquire more insight into the functioning of the mucosal immune system in chickens.
