Abstract

A new exact solution of the time-dependent quantal equation isobtained for the full array of angular momentum mixingtransitions nℓ→nℓ' in atomic hydrogeninduced by collisions with charged particles at ultralowenergies. Based on this new solution, efficient numericalprocedures are devised. It is proven that the present (fixed-frame) solution is equivalent to the rotating-frame approachdescribed by Kazansky and Ostrovsky (Kazansky A K andOstrovsky V N 1996 Phys. Rev. Lett. 77 3094) and that itovercomes the difficulties therein. Analytic expressions for lowquantum numbers n are presented. Numerical results for thetransition array with n = 28 are reported.
