Abstract

The subject of this paper is the robust and quality-oriented design of an electromagnetic wave absorber. Taguchi's parameter design is employed first to optimize the absorption efficiency of the wave absorber over a wide bandwidth while reducing the sensitivity of the optimized performance to a number of hard-to-control variables. However, the variation of the optimized product performance after Taguchi's parameter design might not be within the desired target due to certain design requirements and market expectations. Therefore, a new design scheme is studied with the employment of Taguchi's tolerance design. The results illustrate that the absorption efficiency could be further enhanced by tightening the performance variation level, so that the quality of the absorber is improved.
