Abstract

ABSTRACT Quality parameters of triploid watermelons [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai] were evaluated over two seasons. Fruit rind thickness, incidence of hollow heart, seed maturity, soluble solids concentration, pH, titratable acidity, and juice color varied with cultivar and year. There was a wide range in the concentration of fructose, glucose, sucrose, calculated sweetness, and total sugars among cultivars. There was no difference in yield, but fruit number and mean fruit weight varied with cultivar. Among the red-fleshed cultivars evaluated in both years, ‘Laurel’ (high sugar content), ‘Jupiter’ (lack of hollow heart and mature seeds), and ‘Crimson Jewel’ (desirable internal color) had the best internal fruit characteristics.
