Abstract

Background: Since the mid-2000’s, the Watch-and-Wait approach (W&W) has been widely adopted for rectal cancer patients with a clinical complete response following neoadjuvant (chemo)radiotherapy. The presumed main advantages of W&W are both a better quality of life (QoL) and functional outcome compared to patients treated with total mesorectal excision (TME). Nevertheless, prospective data on QoL and functional outcome of patients following W&W are scarce. The aim of this study is to evaluate the QoL and functional outcome of rectal cancer patients managed by W&W.
