Abstract

This work characterizes scientific and health information from posts addressing cosmetic products on Instagram for one-year. Portuguese profiles that cover cosmetic products were selected based on popularity and expertise. Posts concerning cosmetic products were recorded, and those containing scientific and health information were selected. A new method was used, which allows rating each post as “correct,” “confuse,” or “incorrect”. Ten popular profiles and three expert profiles were selected. Forty-five posts containing scientific and health information about cosmetic products were analyzed. Popular profiles were approximately ten times more likely to convey confusing information about cosmetic products than expert profiles.
