Abstract

Quality of care in anesthesiology is the result of progressive thinking by industrial quality management and pioneers of quality management in medicine. Prevention of catastrophic perioperative complications involves meticulous tracking of perioperative events. This includes continuous monitoring of perioperative events, collecting data, implementing changes, and noticing trends in the data that can help to prevent these events from occurring. This can occur through a targeted quality improvement program implementation. A robust quality improvement system identifies underperformance either by systems, individuals, or equipment and allows for interventions before complications occur.
