Abstract

Production of liquid-stored boar semen for artificial insemination (AI) requires the type of extender and temperature which is appropriate to maintain the quality of sperm during preservation. This research aimed to compare the quality of boar sperm in the beltsville thawing solution (BTS) extender, BTS extender mixed with egg yolk and BTS extender mixed with egg yolk and glycerol stored at 5 and 18°C. Semen were collected from five sexuality mature boars (Landrace, Duroc, and Yorkshire breed). Collected semen was evaluated macros and microscopically. After evaluation, semen individually divided into three tubes. Each tube was diluted with BTS, BTS added with egg yolk, BTS added with egg yolk and 5% glycerol. Each liquid semen was divided into two parts and stored in the refrigerator 5 and 18°C. Liquid-stored semen quality was evaluated every 12 hours until the motility of sperm reach 0%. The results showed the best extender and the best temperature for storage of boar liquid-stored semen was BTS extender stored at 18°C temperature. Best extender for liquid-stored semen that stored at 5°C was BTS extender plus egg yolk. Glycerol cannot be used for boar liquid semen, as it can shorten the sperm life.
