Abstract

Introduction: Newborns are susceptible to hypothermia due to heat loss secondary to high ratio of surface area to body weight, reduced glycogen and fat stores, and environment factors. NYU Winthrop was the first hospital on Long Island to receive the designation of Baby Friendly. As infants in baby-friendly hospitals are allowed to room in with the mom, there is increased risk of hypothermia. In our institution there was no protocol for managing hypothermia in the Mother Baby Unit (MBU), leading to unnecessary NICU admissions.
