Abstract

Hand hygiene is essential for preventing transmission of infections in the healthcare setting. Organizations such as the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) have published guidelines over the years on appropriate hand hygiene for appropriate infection prevention and enhanced patient safety. The Joint Commission further supported caregiver compliance with hand hygiene guidelines by publishing a 2011-2012 National Patient Safety Goal (NSPG.07.01.01) as "comply with either the current CDC hand hygiene guidelines or the current WHO hand hygiene guidelines."
