Abstract

The use of quality control procedures for the monitoring of radioimmunoassay performance is discussed. In particular, the operation of an external quality control programme for the radioimmunoassay of hormones in reproductive physiology organized by the World Health Organization's Special Programme of Research in Human Reproduction is described. A preliminary study undertaken in ten laboratories on procedures for internal quality control has shown the value of generating precision-dose profiles as a means of assessing changes in assay performance, within and between laboratories. Conclusions from these studies indicate that it is essential for laboratories to employ strict quality control measures on a routine basis.
