Abstract

•Understand why quality improvement is important in palliative care settings.•Understand the most common quality improvement terms.•Take away a list of tools and resources that can be used to learn quality improvement, and be shared with administrators and patients. The quality improvement and value-based care realms can initially seem daunting. Everyone seems to be speaking a foreign language. Many of the “words” turn out to be acronyms comprised of words that are often not self-explanatory, or even acronyms of acronyms. And then there's Kaizen, Muri, Mura, Muda, etc. Who came up with this communication system? The different graphs, symbols, plots, pictorials, and tables can feel like arts-and-crafts for science geeks, until you notice each seems to come with its own detailed rules on what goes where and with which symbols. It's enough to make the head spin of the most intelligent amongst us. Quick internet searches secretly done during a conference call, hoping to just follow the conversation, may lead to more questions than answers. It can leave “newbies” afraid to add their valuable input, lest they reveal their ignorance. Palliative care clinicians are being asked more frequently to participate in projects aimed at improving care quality and/or enhancing value-based care program participation. Other times we hear about such projects being planned and want to make sure we're at the table—after all, if you're not at the table, you may be on the menu. This energetic and fun session will help give the “newbie” the basic tools and background needed to confidently share palliative care's unique perspective during the planning, execution, analysis, and modification phases of such projects. While this session won't teach you to lead a quality or value-based care project initiative, the one hour is ideal for understanding new concepts and language without becoming overwhelmed, and hopefully having some fun at the same time. We'll leave plenty of time for questions in this safe space. A robust and easily referenced handout will also be available to reinforce what you learned and provide easily-accessed resources to learn more.
