Abstract

Introduction An information system (IS) can be defined as a system whose objective and functions encompass the gathering, accepting, processing, storing, retrieving, producing and presenting of information. This provision must be relevant to an organization, in such a way that the information is accessible and useful to those who wish to use it, including managers, staff, clients and other interested citizens: In essence an information system is a human activity system which may or may not involve the use of computers. These functions are enacted by differing combinations of people and devices the latter increasingly and predominantly based around information and communications technology (ICT). The information which is the object of these activities must be of relevance within the (organizational) context within which the IS operates.
