Abstract
For non-conservative elastic rod systems qualitative evaluations of the trace of the eigenvalue curve, of the mode of instability (divergence or flutter), and of the buckling load are possible. These may be made by using the so-called Rayleigh’s energy functional, thus extending a concept which, in a similar and well known way, allows for qualitative statements in the classical conservative case.
