Qualitative study on mental feelings of main caregivers of patients with multiple trauma under closed-off management in emergency room

Abstract

Objective To explore the mental feelings and demands of main caregivers of patients with multiple trauma under closed-off management in emergency room and to provide a reference for targeted interventions. Methods The main caregivers of the patients with multiple trauma in the Emergency Department of a hospital between June and December 2017 were selected by purposive sampling. The patients received profound semi-structural interview based on phenomenological methods in qualitative studies. The data were organized and analyzed according to Colaizzi phenomenological analysis. Results Totally 4 themes were obtained by classification and refining: mental pressure, too much mental pressure, accepting the reality but uncertain about the future, and weak support systems. Conclusion Nursing workers should pay more attention to the physical and psychological pressure of main caregivers of patients with multiple trauma under closed-off management in emergency room as well as their mental demands. Information should be effectively communicated in order to improve the patients' confidence in and satisfaction with nursing work.
