Abstract

A study of people who are self-employed producing crafts and selling the work at local craft fairs demonstrates concepts of household economies, multiple livelihood strategies, and the informal economy. Interviews with 18 crafters revealed complex interactions among household members involving mutual support, exchanges of goods and services, and contributions of income from a variety of sources. It is proposed that occupational therapists must view individuals as members of household economies in order to understand better their occupational performance issues.
