Abstract

In this paper an alternative approach to process planning modeling has been suggested. Since it is quite common that human operators and other skilled personnel in a shopfloor communicate, evaluate, and judge on possible alternatives using words of natural language - that means qualitatively - such linguistic basis for modeling has been chosen. Five features of the process planning elements are identified as fuzzy ones: (1) workpiece material hardness, (2) machine tool rigidity, (3) cutting tool rake angle, (4) cutting tool entering angle, and (5) cutting tool material quality. For each of them fuzzy model is built as well as appropriate algorithms for fuzzification. Finally, an illustrative example regarding cutting tools selection has been presented.
