Abstract

Cross-sectional and quantitative study that aimed to identify the quality of life of family caregivers of children admitted to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), of a public university hospital. Participated in the study 28 family members of children admitted to the PICU from April to August 2009. The data was collected through interviews, in which Flanagan Scale of Quality of Life was applied. The items that indicated better satisfaction/quality of life were: Be able to communicate and listen to music, read, watch television or to go to the movies and the ones that achieved less satisfaction/quality of life were: Participation in community/social activities and learning. Concerning the areas, recreation and relationship with other people were the ones that showed higher satisfaction/quality of life and the involvement in social, civic and community activities presented less satisfaction/quality of life. It was concluded that the commitment in quality of life is related, mainly, to the need to perform social and learning activities. It is suggested to the investigated ICU team, the achievement of guidelines towards to participation of family members at social events, learning activities, even if not concerning the care of a sick child, but in entertainment and leisure aspects.
