Abstract

The quadrupole interaction of the first 2 + states of 178, 180Hf, implanted into a hafnium metal single crystal by 45 MeV and 56 MeV 16O ions and 15 MeV α-particles, has been studied by the perturbed angular correlation after Coulomb excitation. A static quadrupole interaction has been observed. A comparison with previous Mössbauer experiments suggests the presence of spatial field gradient distributions due to radiation damage caused by the recoiling ions.
