Abstract

Magnetization measurements were performed on a single crystal of the ErNi 2 ferromagnet. Below T c = 7 K, whereas the crystal field favors the [111] direction, the observed spontaneous magnetization is along [100]. We show that this behaviour originates from negative quadrupolar pair interactions between Er ions.
