Abstract
Gauss sums over a finite field are generalized to ones over a matrix ring, related to numbers of solutions of diagonal matrix equations. A similar relation of quadratic Gauss sums of two types is obtained. We also consider quadratic diagonal matrix equations with scalar coefficients.
