Abstract

A dual band quad elements multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna structure has been investigated in this paper. The basic antenna element is based on meanderline patch microstrip structure. The antenna is resonating at WiFi (2.4 GH%) and WiMAX (3.6 GH%) frequency bands. The size of the four elements MIMO is extremely compact and the total dimension of the MIMO antenna structure is 0.48 λ × 0.48 λ, where λ is free-space wavelength calculated at the lower resonant frequency. The dielectric substrate used to design the antenna is FR4, which has permittivity and loss tangent value 4.4 and 0.02 respectively with thickness 1.6 mm. The coupling between the adjacent antenna pairs is below -22 dB for overall frequency band. The envelop correlation coefficient (ECC) is less than 0.004 and the value of the diversity gain (DG) is average 9.98 dB over entire bandwidth. The values of the channel capacity loss (CCL) is 0.0025 at resonant frequencies. The total active reflection coefficient (TARC) of the proposed quad elements MIMO structure is found to be satisfactory. The radiation patterns are stable in both the plane with wide half power bandwidth (HPBW) and low cross polarization level. The diversity characteristics of the MIMO structure is satisfactory and qualified for practical system.
