Abstract

Q-switched, high peak power oscillation of a laser-diode pumped, compact Er,Yb:glass laser has been realized using a three mirror coupled-cavity configuration. Single-axial and multi-axial mode oscillation was successfully selected by changing of the external cavity length. We obtained a high peak output power of 920 W and a pulse energy of 8.3 µJ in multi-axial mode oscillation and 60 W in single-axial mode oscillation. The single mode oscillation was step-tunable from 1532 nm to 1542 nm. Pulse width was widely variable by increasing the pump power from 270 ns to 150 ns and from 50 ns to 8 ns for the external cavity lengths of 0.4 mm and 1.5 mm, respectively.
