Abstract

Introduction: Many females undergoing restorative proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis are of child-bearing age. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of infertility in women after major abdomino-pelvic surgery (restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis) and to identify surgical factors that may affect post-operative fertility. Methods: A questionnaire inquiring as to both pre and post-operative fecundity was mailed to 186 female patients who were between the ages of 18 and 40 at the time of their restorative proctocolectomy surgery between 1985 and 2006.
