Abstract

Objective: Several reports have suggested that increased melatonin level may retard some cancer growth. Although blind patients have increased serum melatonin levels, no study has assessed outcomes of cancer patients after curative intent treatment. The aim of this study was to compare outcomes in patients with normal vision vs. total visual impairment after curative intent treatment for lung cancer. Method: A nationwide study was conducted of all veterans diagnosed with total visual impairment (no light perception) receiving care at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers who subsequently developed lung carcinoma and received curative intent treatment during fiscal years 1994-2003.
