Abstract

Introduction: Recent studies have supported the non-operative management of diverticular disease secondary to increased unfavorable outcomes and cost with surgical therapy. We wish to compare the in hospital mortality, complication rates, length of stay, and costs associated with elective surgery for diverticular disease to other diseases requiring colectomy. Methods: Data were derived from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) file from 1998-2004. All patients with the primary procedure including a left-sided colon resection or subtotal colectomy, with the diagnosis of diverticular disease (DD), colon cancer (CC), or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) were included.
