Abstract
Background: Wound infection after sternotomy is a dangerous complication of cardio-surgical procedures. Treatment is often difficult due to the presence of necrotic and infected tissue, a risk of mediastinitis or cardiac perforation. A new wound healing system is based on combination of hyaluronan with iodine. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of hyaluronate-iodine on the treatment of sternal dehiscences. Methods: We treated eight patients with wound infections after sternotomy complicated by sternal dehiscence.
