Abstract

Objective: Long term HIV infection and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) may be associated with many clinical complications including pulmonary artery hypertension. Recently, we have found that HIV protease inhibitor ritonavir (RTV) can induce vascular dysfunction through oxidative stress. Soy isoflavones have potent antioxidative effects in many systems. The purpose of this study was to determine whether equol, a new soy isoflavone, could prevent RTV-induced vascular injury in porcine pulmonary arteries.
