Abstract

Seamless mobility between different radio access networks is required in the next-generation cellular and wireless heterogeneous environments to provide uninterrupted service to the user. Maintaining the Quality of Service (QoS) required per application during the handover process in between different access networks (Vertical Handover) and, optimizing the power consumption in a mobile terminal during the vertical handover process in a heterogeneous environment are quite challenging. The proposed method uses a Fuzzy Logic-based vertical handover decision algorithm which assesses multiple input parameters and determines the most desirable network preference between LTE and WLAN to perform the handover. An Intelligent Interface Activation technique based on the prediction using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model is also proposed to reduce unnecessary network measurements during excellent network conditions of the current network, thereby optimizing the power consumption in mobile terminals.
