Abstract

The aims of this article were to develop a Quality of Life Inventory for Epileptic Adolescents (QOLIEA) and to demonstrate it's reliability and validity. The item pool of QOLIBA was developed by literature review, relevant instrument (QOLIE-AD-48), qualitative study of an adolescents' focus group interviews, and experts' suggestions. There were 53 items including subscales of functions of physical, psychological, social, cognitive, and disease/treatment related symptoms. In order to demonstrate the reliability and validity of QOLIEA, 92 adolescents with epilepsy and their major caregiver were recruited. The results indicated that QOLIEA had good internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, content validity, convergent validity, criterion-related validity, and clinical validity. However, some results of discriminate validity did not support the hypothesis. This study demonstrated that the QOLTEA was a reliable and valid measurement for health-related quality of life for epileptic adolescents. It is a fair instrument to evaluate outcomes of nursing and medical interventions.
