Abstract

An experiment of quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of the photon number using only one single-mode optical fibre is reported in this paper. Two beams with different wavelength counter-propagate in a single-mode optical fibre and interact with each other in an optical Kerr medium. The value of the optical Kerr constant is measured by means of this scheme. A relationship between quantum nondemolition measurement and direct detection of the photon number is obtained.
