Abstract

In 221 bce the Qin state completed its conquest of its rivals and announced a series of reforms that are generally accepted as the foundation of the Chinese imperial system. It was the first north Chinese power to control much of the Yangzi Valley, and its armies conquered areas as far flung as Guangzhou and northern Korea. The Qin dynasty was overthrown by large‐scale uprisings but its administrative system was rebuilt by the Han dynasty, which established it as the standard model of political organization in China.
