Abstract
Calculations of quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects in high- Z few-electron atoms are reviewed. Attention is focused on the specific example of the ground state of one- and two-electron uranium. Based on currently available theoretical results from QED, the energy level of the 1S state of hydrogen-like uranium is E(1S) = −131815.0(6) eV and the energy level of the 1 1S 0 state in helium-like uranium is E(1 1s 0) = −261383(4) eV. The effects considered here are relevant to the innermost level in heavy neutral atoms as well.
