Abstract

The activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, pyruvate kinase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (GTP), pyruvate carboxylase and citrate (si)-synthase were determined in kidney cortex tissue from developing lambs aged between 72 and 170 days conceptual age. The rate of carbohydrate production by kidney cortex slices was also measured. A marked increase was found in the activity of citrate (si)-synthase, pyruvate carboxylase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (GTP) and malate dehydrogenase during this period whilst pyruvate kinase activity declined. Gluconeogenesis was demonstrated only in tissue from lambs after birth.
