Abstract

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with strong photoluminescence (PL) emission and intriguing upconversion emission property have been prepared by facile and effective pyrolysis of the salt calcium disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA–2Na–Ca·4H2O) at 400 °C. The relative fluorescence quantum yield of the CQDs in aqueous solution reached 66.03 %, which is the highest value yet obtained. Moreover, the CQDs also had a strong upconversion PL property on excitation at 600–750 nm. It is proposed that an anti-Stokes shift is responsible for this upconversion PL emission.
