Abstract

AbstractCarbon is one of the most attractive biomaterials in many respects. Recent developments in high strength carbon materials for the aerospace industry have led to new forms of carbon which have good structural properties. Several of these, based on a vapor‐de‐posited pyrolytic graphite matrix, are described. A needle‐like silicon‐carbide strengthened pyrolytic graphite has been implanted in rabbits and chimpanzees with encouraging results. Applications are being sought.
