Abstract

Solutions of naphthalene in benzene were pyrolyzed under vacuum at 803 K. Biphenyls, isomeric terphenyls and phenylnaphthalenes, together with triphenylene and fluoranthene were found among the products. A kinetic treatment based upon the steady state approximations shows that the rate constants of similar processes do not differ very much each other. The presence of the two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is ascribed to competitive reactions involving the radicalic intermediates.
