Abstract

Non-communicating large pyelocaliceal diverticula are rare findings. A 10-year-old boy presented with recurrent abdominal pain and was noted to have right hydronephrosis on ultrasound scan. The intravenous urogram and an initial isotope scan showed no obstruction to the renal pelvis. A repeat isotope scan with recurrence of symptoms 10 months later demonstrated a pelviureteric junction obstruction. At surgery, a large pelvicaliceal diverticulum with absence of communication with the renal pelvis was found. Sealed-off pelvicaliceal diverticula pose a diagnostic challenge to the clinician.
